Lower Shabelle Governor, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Siidi confirmed the fall of Barawe after fierce fighting erupted between al Shabaab militants and advancing allied forces.
He said two soldiers from the allied forces have been injured while 13 al Shabaab fighters were killed in the clashes.
He added the forces have set up military bases in and around the town to ensure the security of the town.
He also confirmed there will be talks between the allied forces and the residents of Barawe to discuss ways to establish close ties between the forces and the residents to improve the security of the town.
