A high level conference on FGM opens in Mogadishu
A high level conference on Female Gentile mutilation (FGM) opened in Mogadishu on Saturday.
FGM which is widely practiced in Somalia has been unconstitutional in the country since 2012
The conference for Somali leaders and influencers will focus on the success reached so far in the fight against FGM and the challenges faced in fight to end the practice.
Today’s conference officially opened by Somalia’s attorney general is attended by religious leaders, representatives from civil society, UNICEF, UNFPA, the state minister of minister women and Human Rights, the deputy minister of endowment and religious affairs, information, attorney general and lawmakers of federal parliament of Somalia.
The participants will discuss in lengthy action on how to begin the change and the need to move away from the practice.
The federal government of Somalia has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicate female genital mutilation in the country.
The government has made this made this promise in a high level conference held in Somalia in 2016.
The country’s attorney general, Ahmed Ali Dahir, told the audience of religious leaders, politicians and women’s groups in Mogadishu: “We need to specifically fight FGM. We need an enabling law.”
The religious scholars who oppose Female Genital Mutilation say that the cultural practice that has no place in Islam.
