Al-Shabaab Launches Ambush Attack On Military Convoy Near Mogadishu
Heavily armed fighters from the Islamic militant group Al-Shabab were reported to have launched a daring ambush attack on Somali military convoy near Mogadishu on Tuesday.
Residents in Marka city, the regional capital of Lower Shabelle region, told Radio Shabelle that they could hear sustained gunfire flared up after the surprise assault by Al-Shabaab.
The militants targeted military vehicles ferrying supplies to army bases in Marka town from Somali capital Mogadishu. The convoy was travelling on the beachside road.
There were no immediate reports of casualties as result of the Al-Shabaab attack and both sides are yet to comment on the ambush, which occurred on Mogadishu-Marka street.
The Somali government is trying to dislodge Al-Shabaab from the remaining strongholds in the south and central regions in the country with the support of African Union forces.
