The Slain Journalist (Farah Jamal Adan) was assassinated by Alshabab on March 1st, 2021.
Alshabab suddenly claimed that they have killed Farah Jamal Adan on March 4th, 2021. Alshabab claimed that Farah was against their terrorist agenda and that he campaigned against alshabab’s carnage and human rights violations in the areas under their control.
Jamal Farah Adan freelanced for Radio Daljir, Radio Galkayo, Radio Garowe, three of the most important radio stations in the centre of the country, and worked for Horn Afrik News Agency for Human Rights HANAHR as the lead expert in its targeted media advocacy on human rights HANAHR.
He was gunned down at around 6:45 p.m. local time as he sat outside a shop owned by his family by unidentified gunmen.
According to local hospital sources who spoke he National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), RSF’s partner organisation in Somalia, confirmed that Farah died almost immediately after being shot three times in the head and neck, he succumbed to his injuries and proonounced dead at local hospital.
The two assailants who opened fire at Farah, escaped the scene of the crime, and no one was held accountable.
Prior to Farah’s assassination, Farah received death threats from alshabab through different phone calls (both local and international) and sms threatening him to death as a reprisal for his legitimate human rights work and loudly speaking out against alshabab’s heinous crimes and human rights violations in the areas under their control.
No doubt Farah’s assassination is a great loss of veteran journalist and a slap in the face of justice as the assailants send a message which is “impunity is possible even with such brutal murder.”
HANAHR asks the local authority and the international freedom of expression defenders to investigate and act swiftly and accordingly.
