The African Union Peace and Security Council members are set to meet today (Thursday) to discuss the political situation in Somalia days after the Somali parliament extend the mandate of the president.
The council said the meeting will kick off at 10 am East African Time today.
The meetings barely comes a week after incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo met with his counterpart Felix Tshisekedi of DRC and invited the AU to help mediate a solution, but as long as there is no interference.
During the meeting, President Tshisekedi said he was willing to render his support to “African solutions to African problems.”
Mid April African Union in a joint statement with the EU and UN rejected President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s extension of term but endorsed efforts of the African Union to help parties resolve an electoral impasse.
The regional bloc IGAD it welcomed the intervention of the African Union but did not refer the September 17 deal. But an informal session of the UN Security Council Tuesday poured cold water on the extension move and demanded a return to talks.
