Somaliland wins first ever football match
The Somaliland national team played and won its first ever soccer match Saturday, beating a pick-up team of local Swedish players 1-0 in the small town of Vrigstad in Småland in southern Sweden.
Somaliland is self-declared autonomous break away from Somalia. Its independence is unrecognized by any country, but unlike troubled Somalia, Somaliland is often seen as a peaceful oasis of democracy in the region.
Among those there for the match was former Somaliland Foreign Minister Edna Adan, one of those fighting for international recognition of the territory. “Twenty-five years ago we separated from Somalia,” she told Swedish Radio News, and since then we have promoted peace and democracy, so that refugees will have someplace to return to.
