Human Rights Centre calls on Ethiopian authorities to release detained Somaliland journalist.
Yusuf Mohamed Hasan, editor-in-chief of Somaliland Sun website, went missing in 24th December 2014 at Jigjiga, Ethiopia, and was later confirmed detained, according to Somaliland Sun journalist.
Yusuf visited Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, for private reasons, journalist told Human Rights Centre. He was arrested in his way back to Somaliland through Jigjiga, the capital of Somali region of Ethiopia.
Human Rights Centre (HRC) urges the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to release immediately Yusuf Mohamed Hasan.
“Human Rights Centre wrote appeal to the Ethiopian consulate in Somaliland, but we did not receive any response,” says Guleid Ahmed Jama, chairperson of Human Rights Centre.
Freedom of media and freedom of expression are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights as well as the Ethiopian constitution. HRC reiterates its call on the government of Ethiopia to release Yusuf.
