Somalia: Heavy clan fighting reignites in Beledweyne city
Heavy fighting between two clan militias reignited on Monday in the strategic town of Beledweyne, the provincial capital of Hiiraan in central Somalia.
Residents reported that the tribal clash broke out at Howlwadag nighbourhood in Beledweyne, where two rival clan militiamen engaged in a fierce exchange of fire that left at least 14 people dead.
There are no immediate figures available regarding casualties of Monday’s battle, but residents are reporting heavy artillery fire and the use of anti aircraft weapons by both sides.
However, Hiiraan clan elders have not been communicated face-to-face, hampering efforts to broker lasting peace between the two clans.
