Puntland Executes 21 Al-Shabaab Convicts
The semi autonomous Somali region of Puntland has executed 21 Al-Shabaab members to death on Sunday.
Eighteen of the militants were executed in Galkayo while the other three were sentenced in Garowe and Qardho.
All of the men were suspected of belonging to the militant group Al-Shabaab. The men were accused of carrying out assassinations.
The victims included government officers and private civilians.
This is the biggest number of Al-Shabaab members in history sentenced to death at one time. Al-Shabaab fighters were sentenced to death and shot by a firing squad in Puntland state in 2016.
According to Puntland, the convictions will deal a heavy blow to Al-Shabaab’s operations in the region.
This comes barely less than two weeks after the regional state sentenced 17 men to death.
