EU Welcomes AU Rejection Of Farmaajo’s Term Extension
The European Union supported the African Union’s rejection of any mandate extension, following African Union’s Peace and Security Council’s 22nd April Communique on the political and security situation in Somalia.
In a statement, the continental body welcomed the call for a Troop Contributing Countries (TCC) meeting to assess the security situation in Somalia
“The European Union supports the rejection of any mandate extension and looks forward to a prompt return to negotiations, facilitated by an African Union envoy, to achieve consensus for elections, based on the agreement of 17 September 2020,” the statement read in part.
“The EU also welcomes the call for a Troop Contributing Countries (TCC) meeting to assess the security situation in Somalia,” the statement added.
On 12 April 2021 Somalia’s Lower House members have extended the mandate of President Mohamed Farmajo by two years a decision which was widely opposed by the opposition candidates and draw criticism and international condemnation from Somalia’s partners.
Last week, Somalia’s isolated President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo flew Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and requested DRC president, Felix Tshisekedi who is leads the African Union to intervene Somalia troubled election impasse.
In a separate statement issues by the members of the security council on Friday underscored that consensus would be vital for any electoral model to be successfully delivered.
They noted the 17 September agreement has remained the only basis so far endorsed by the Federal Government of Somalia and all Federal Member States.
