Mogadishu Leads In Covid-19 Cases As Somalia Records 53 New Infections
Somalia has recorded 53 new cases of Coronavirus in the last 24 hours raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Horn of African Nation to 15,456.
Out of the new cases, 29 males and 24 are female according to the health ministry.
Two people have succumbed to the virus raising the total number of Covid-19 deaths to 813.
Benadir and Puntland have a surge of positive cases with the two administrative regions recording 31 and 17 cases.
Benadir which covers the city of Mogadishu has been leading in the number of new infections in recent weeks, on some days accounting for almost half of the daily infections.
Mogadishu recorded 31 new cases from the total 53 cases reported on Sunday evening, which is more than 50 per cent of the infections recorded by the ministry of health.
On Saturday, the capital recorded 32 out of the 45 cases and 19 of the 35 cases recorded on Thursday.
Somalia rolled out its mass vaccinations on March 16, having received 300,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines under the COVAX facility but there has been a challenge as most of the population do not accept to be vaccinated.
On April 11, the horn of African country received 200,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines donated by China to boost its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
