Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo has extended an invitation for a consultative meeting between the federal government and leaders of the federal member states (FMS) to discuss electoral issues ahead of polls.
In a statement, Villa Somalia called on the region state leaders to participate in the dialogue on the 22nd of March.
“The president of Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo call for a conference on 22nd of March 2020, to finalise talks between the federal government, regional states and Banaadir region over election issues,” the statement reads in part.
”President Farmajo urged the Heads of State and Government of Benadir Region to pay close attention to this conference to address the concerns raised by the return of the electoral agreement in order to lead the country to free and fair elections,” the statement added.
The meeting comes after the US called on leaders in Somalia to immediately hold elections and resolve their differences.
Leaders of Puntland and Jubaland have in the past accused President Farmaajo of planning to govern the country against the will of the people and called the current government illegitimate.
The horn of the African nation was supposed to hold parliamentary elections late last year and presidential elections on 8th February but differences between the leaders of the federal and regional governments delayed the polls.
