A court in the Somali capital has dropped a case against former Jubaland fugitive Minister Abdirashid Janan after country’s Attorney General appeal.
The country’s attorney general and the Benadir Regional Court said Abdirashid Janan’s case file had been closed in a letter.
The federal government previously considered Janan a fugitive of justice after he escaped from a Mogadishu prison in late January 2020.
Somalia issued an international red notice with INTERPOL for Janan’s arrest after his escape.
Janan and forces loyal to him clashed with Somali federal troops on January 25 in Beled Hawo, leading to the death of 11 people.
He later surrendered to federal government forces after reaching a deal with the Somali government in March 2021.
Amnesty International called on Somalia’s federal government to ensure Janan faced accountability for alleged human rights violations he committed in Gedo while he was a security minister.
