Mogadishu to open talks with Garowe
The central government of Somalia has said it will open talks with regional state of punt land soon to solve the misunderstanding that has emerged between the two administrations.
The president of the regional state of punt land Abdweli Gas has earlier this year announced to cut ties with the central government in Mogadishu over political issues connected to the implementation of the federalism in the country.
The Somali deputy PM Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed has stressed the need for talks with Garowe administration as soon as possible in a press statement released from his office.
“The talks which was set to start earlier has been delayed due to some an avoidable circumstances,” said part of the statement.
“The federal government is committed to unity and reconciliation of Somalia people,” it added.
Punt land, an arid region of north-east Somalia, declared itself an autonomous state in August 1998.
The move was in part an attempt to avoid the clan warfare engulfing southern Somalia.
The region has grabbed the world headlines with an upsurge in pirate attacks on international shipping in the Indian Ocean.
