Uganda Set To Deploy Over 1,800 Troops To Somalia Next Month

Uganda is set to deploy as many as 1,846 extra soldiers to Somalia to to join the peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

The commander of the land forces of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who visited the soldiers said they will be deployed in Somalia next month.

“ Uganda and Somalia are brothers forever. The bonds that unite us are far greater than anything that can ever separate us. Almighty God continue to bless the brotherhood between Uganda and Somalia,” Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

He also praised the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) for maintaining peace in Somalia.

“Our aim is to help our brothers find peace because we do not want to see them suffer,” he added.

Uganda was the first country to deploy troops in Somalia in 2007, in a U.S.-backed initiative to pacify the nation.

They have been in Somalia for more than 10 years, keeping the peace and supporting Somalia’s government to fend off attacks from al-Shabab militants.

The Ugandan troops remains the largest contingent in AMISOM with 6,223 troops based in Sector 1 which comprises of Banadir (Mogadishu), Middle and Lower Shabelle regions.
