ICJ To Hold Final Hearing In Maritime Raw Between Somalia And Kenya
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to hear the final maritime dispute case between Kenya and Somalia, following a two-day hearing by a delegation representing Somalia.
In a statement, ICJ said the public hearings in the case concerning Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean Kenya and Somalia will conclude on Thursday.
“ICJ is holding a final hearing in the case of Maritime Delimitation in the Indian Ocean (Somalia v Kenya),” the statement reads in part. “The case, which began in 2014, concerns the delimitation of the international maritime boundary between Somalia and Kenya.” the statement read in part.
Kenya has failed to participate in hearings at the World Court about a maritime boundary dispute with Somalia over contested parts of the Indian Ocean, in a dispute that has strained the neighbours’ diplomatic relations.
The dispute between Kenya and Somalia is over which direction the two countries’ border extends into the Indian Ocean.
Somalia argues that the maritime boundary should continue on in the same direction as the land border’s southeasterly path.
While Kenya insists that the border should take a roughly 45-degree turn at the shoreline and run in a latitudinal line.
