Militants storm Mogadishu hotels
Gunmen stormed two hotels popular with Somali officials in the Somali capital on Friday evening, killing at least five people, officials said.
Authorities cordoned off the area around the Siyad and Weheliye hotels immediately after the attack began, at around 6:30 p.m. local time.
Gunmen battled security forces inside the two hotels as ambulances raced out of the area.
The two assaults were reminiscent of two hotel attacks by Al-Shabab in Mogadishu last month in which dozens of people were killed.
Somali security officials told reporters that at least five people had been killed and five wounded in the attack. He said police shot dead one attacker but gave few other details.
A spokeswoman for Al-Shabab confirmed the two attacks, according to Reuters.
