Former Speaker of Parliament Shariif Hassan elected as a President of Southern West Regional State despite protests and rejection
Former Speaker of the Somalia Parliament , ShariF Hassan Sheikh Aden has been elected as the new President of the newly established Southern West Regional State in Baidoa on Monday.
Sharif Hassan has been competing with four other prsidential candidates who quited later reasoning that the former speaker attain majority votes of the represenatives attending the conference .
The overall number of the representaives who were present during the voting were 396 and 373 voted in favor of the elected president , 15 voted against as well as 8 abstained.
During the session of voting two people were killed and others were wounded after protestor believed to be supporters of Madobe Nunow , the leader of Southern West State comprising six regions deffied by the Federal government took to the streets of Baidoa chanting slogans against Shariif Hassan and Federal government .
“Our supporters were targeted and killed by government security forces “ said Mohamed Aliyow who supports Madobe Nunow.
Somali Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Osman Jawari said that the election is “Null and Void “.
In a statement , Jawari said that the government will not recognize the regional state established .
