Two Female Bombers Among Shabaab Arrested in Kenya
Nairobi — Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo says security agencies have arrested 10 Al Shabaab members as they returned to Kenya from Somalia.
Among the 10, Kimaiyo says, two are female suicide bombers who were on a revenge mission.
In a statement read by Kenya Police spokeswoman Zipporah Mboroki on Wednesday, Kimaiyo said more details will be given on their identities as investigations are still ongoing.
“The police through an intelligence-led operation have arrested 10 Al-Shabaab terrorists who had planned to carry revenge attacks in the country,” she stated.
“The suspects have been involved in the recent terror attacks in Nairobi. They sneaked out of the country and returned in the month of October in company of two women suicide bombers.”
She declined to give details on where and when they were arrested, saying the matter was sensitive noting that the 10 were returning from Somalia where they received training from the illegal group.
“More information will be given to you as investigations progress,” she said.
Kimaiyo has in the meantime asked landlords to take full details of people renting their houses and share the information with the nearest security agency.
Al-Shabaab militias have been linked to attacks across the country with recent being in Lamu County.
Previously, Lamu had been hit by a series of attacks since mid-June which had fuelled divisions in the coastal region blamed on radicalization, ethnic tensions and land disputes.
Somalia’s Al-Qaeda linked Al Shabaab have claimed responsibility for some of the attacks, saying they were in retaliation of the continued presence of Kenya’s military in their lawless country.
Normalcy is slowly returning in the troubled county following a three-month curfew issued by the Inspector General of police.
Kimaiyo also said police are following up some individuals in Mombasa who are involved in radicalising youths.
“They have been inciting them to take arms and attack innocent citizens. Police are investigating these incidents,” the police spokeswoman stated.
